Evidence of the Barrier Layer in the Surface Layer of the Tropics

چکیده

Comparisons between isothermal depth to the top of the thermocline, and the mixed layer depth based on a ot criterion were undertaken for the tropical world oceans. In three equatorial regions, a shallower mixed layer than isothermal layer occurs, implying the presence of a strong halocline above the thermocline. This distance separating the top of the thermocline and the bottom of the mixed layer is referred to as the "barrier layer", in relation to its impediment to vertical heat flux out of the base of the mixed layer. Different mechanisms are responsible for maintaining the barrier layer in each of the three regions. In the western equatorial Pacific Ocean a salinity budget confirmed that heavy local precipitation most likely results in the isothermal but salt-stratified layer. In the northwest equatorial Atlantic, it is hypothesized that high salinity waters are subducted at the subtropics during winter and advected westward as a salinity maximum in the upper layers of the tropics, resulting in the barrier layer. In the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean, monsoonal related rainfall and river runoff contribute significantly to the freshwater flux, producing salt stratification i the surface. These results uggest the need to include the effects of salinity stratification when determining mixed layer depth.

Failure Mechanisms Investigation in Thermal Barrier Coatings under Isothermal and Non-sothermal Fatigue Loadings using Design of Experiments

In this article, failure and fracture mechanisms in an aluminum alloy (which has been used in diesel internal combustion engines), with and without ceramic thermal barrier coatings, have been investigated under isothermal and non-isothermal fatigue loadings. In this research, the base material is an aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloy and the thermal barrier coating includes a metallic bond coat l...

Thermal barrier coating effect on stress and temperature distribution of diesel engines cylinder heads using a two-layer viscoelasticity model with considering viscosity effects

This paper presents finite element analysis (FEA) of a coated and uncoated cylinder heads of a diesel engine to examine the distribution of temperature and stress. A thermal barrier coating system was applied on the combustion chamber of the cylinder heads, consists of two-layer systems: a ceramic top coat (TC), made of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), ZrO2-8%Y2O3 and also a metallic bond coat...

Investigation of blind massive sulphide deposit signatures in the calcrete layers as a geochemical barrier: A case study of Areachap, Kantienpan and Copperton deposits

The trace element contents on the surface originated from mineralization would depend to the thickness of the calcrete layer above the ore deposit on the surface. A very thick layer of calcrete may not allow for much dispersion of the elements of interest in the surface. These elements may be concentrated in non-magnetic and magnetic part of calcrete. Based on the current research, mineralogica...

Dispersion of Torsional Surface Wave in a Pre-Stressed Heterogeneous Layer Sandwiched Between Anisotropic Porous Half-Spaces Under Gravity

The study of surface waves in a layered media has their viable application in geophysical prospecting. This paper presents an analytical study on the dispersion of torsional surface wave in a pre-stressed heterogeneous layer sandwiched between a pre-stressed anisotropic porous semi-infinite medium and gravitating anisotropic porous half-space. The non-homogeneity within the intermediate layer a...
